The existing building was in a very poor state and whilst it would have been simple to demolish and rebuild, a more sustainable option was to utilise the existing frame and foundations, thereby reducing material use, waste and transport movements to and from site.
Environmentally and economically sustainable elements are included to ensure that Sorby House remains viable long after its subsidy has ended. Light fittings are a low-energy type and a biomass boiler, using locally sourced wood-chips, provides heating. The ventilation is via a passive system that uses the glazed vertical plenum behind the glass facade.
