Given global carbon concerns, the UK’s aging family of nuclear reactors and the need to enhance the UK supply chain, the Government’s 2009 Low Carbon Industrial Strategy gave a commitment to “establish a Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre that combines the knowledge, practices and expertise of manufacturing companies with the capability of universities.”

Within six months it was announced that the Nuclear AMRC would be led by the Universities of Sheffield and Manchester, with Rolls-Royce as lead partner alongside Areva, Westinghouse, Sheffield Forgemasters and Tata Steel.

The main construction investment would be at the Advanced Manufacturing Park, South Yorkshire. Designed to similar environmental and technical standards to its successful neighbour, the original AMRC, the Nuclear AMRC was delivered three months ahead of schedule to match the requirements of funding from the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills and the European Regional Development Fund.

No nuclear materials are used here, the centre investigates the efficient manufacture of components for power stations; enhancing the UK supply chain’s knowledge and skills. A significantly reinforced ground-floor slab and a 50 tonne gantry-crane allow total equipment layout flexibility. Temperature control has been set at 20+/-2°C and large north-roof lights contribute to amazing daylight levels. The CAVE, one of two virtual reality suites, has an advanced 3D real time environment using four projectors.

With a number of strategic environmental parameters set at the beginning of this project, BREEAM Excellent was a minimum requirement.  Included in the project budget, a 900 kilowatt wind turbine and ground source heat pump bore array has propelled this project to excel in energy and innovation credits, over achieving with an 'Outstanding' rating and scoring 90%.

Designed with people in mind, the Nuclear AMRC has a range of special work place environments including a dramatic high level research mezzanine, which helps to articulate this large building externally and provides a panoramic view over the Advanced Manufacturing Park.
