Bordering St George’s Gardens and sitting within a residential conservation area, a key challenge was to ensure that the five-storey building complemented its surroundings. This was achieved by careful selection of materials and recessing the upper floor. At the same time we achieved an approval to turn over a proportion of the site to residential use; this then part-funded the development.
Two bright atria spaces sit between three parallel teaching blocks and connecting bridges act as social gathering spaces. On the ground floor shared learning and social spaces spill into the atria. This arrangement is highly efficient, actually increasing education floor space on the reduced site and at the same time creating a powerful sense of connection and community amongst staff and students.
