The themes here are light, versatility, legibility and sustainability.

The school’s design, made up of six “pavilions” connected by an internal pedestrian street, is very much a response to the parkland setting.  Yet this concept is put to maximum effect, creating a harmonious setting for learning with the spacious internal street providing social/learning and dining space.  The layout of the building could not be clearer and use of glazing between the pavilions together with large roof lights ensures that the street is flooded with natural light.

Sustainability measures include a green roof, rainwater harvesting, a biomass boiler and a system that can employ both mechanical and natural ventilation in response to different external temperatures.  Overnight cooling of the building’s concrete structure avoids overheating during the summer months.

The client demanded a versatile, robust and inspiring learning environment; all teaching and social/learning areas are carefully considered, crafted and equipped with suitable furniture and ICT facilities.  This ensures spaces are fully inclusive and capable of supporting a wide variety of teaching and learning styles.

At Joseph Rowntree our dedication to translating educators' and students' needs into a world-class solution won a number of awards including:

- Excellence in BSF Most Versatile Learning Environment 2009 ;
- Best building in the 'community use' category, York Design Awards 2010
- Commendation in the Making Space International Architecture Awards 2010
- Bronze White Rose Award: Royal Institute of British Architects 2010

"The consultation that took place involved all sectors of the community and everyone fed in ideas to the designers and architects.  The result is spectacular - a wonderful building and a great legacy for the future.  Many congratulations to all involved"

Councillor Carol Runciman

"We have ended up with an outstanding, impressive design which reflects our needs"
