Founded by the University of Sheffield, in association with companies such as Boeing and Rolls-Royce, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) sets new standards for manufacturing research facilities worldwide.

Research with Boeing focuses upon high-performance machining of specialist alloys. New machining techniques are also allowing a number of UK manufacturing clients to compete globally by slashing production times whilst maintaining high quality. Other Research looks at low-volume high-value assembly; develops new manufacturing technologies for the latest composite materials; and provides design/structural testing services.

This manufacturing centre is in fact very much a people building. The floor-space ratio of large-scale workshops to desk-based research space is just 2:1 and an intimate relationship was required between the two types of space. Therefore the whole centre is contained within a single rectilinear volume and researchers working at their desks are able to view the workshop from a high-level office mezzanine.

The BREEAM (sustainability) rating of ‘Excellent’ was achieved using a wind turbine and ground source heat pumps. Ethylene-Tetra-Fluoro-Ethylene (ETFE) roof lights and the translucent wall cladding “Kalwall” provide exceptional quantities of natural but diffuse light, reducing the need for artificial lighting whilst maintaining high insulation standards.

A series of AMRC buildings, national and international, have been inspired by this concept in such places as Bristol, Inchinnan, Coventry, Japan, USA and Singapore.

"It is too rarely that a client's expectations are exceeded, but as architects for the University of Sheffield's Rolls-Royce Factory of the Future, Bond Bryan has designed a "BREEAM Excellent" building that has achieved just that. Built on reclaimed land, using environmentally sustainable materials and incorporating renewable energy supplies, the building epitomises the way modern factories can create new opportunities without damaging the environment.  Factory of the Future is a truly impressive building that amazes all who see it and delights all who work in it"
